On the wild shores of Scotland in the early 1800s, Noreen Ridley finds her hopes dashed when her husband is lost at sea. Compelled to go on for the sake of her two little children, she seeks the help of a lonely old shepherd, who is so touched by their faith through tragedy that he is also drawn to the Good Shepherd.

from the author's introduction

"Mama! Write this song into a story!"

Many times my children have made this request, and thus this story was born. True, it is not a factual happening, but by doing research, and in studying the words of this old ballad, I was impressed with the depth of meaning behind the words.

The setting is the early 1800s, when those who chose to follow Christ's teaching often suffered greatly. Disowned by family and friends, it was only the inner assurance of God's presence that gave them strength to remain faithful.

Passing on to our children the need of a personal walk with the Lord Jesus, our Shepherd, is my prayer and the reason for writing this story.
