[That First Amendment and the Remnant] This book should become a classic contribution to the history of what the author calls the Remnant or Authentic Church. He brings to light many of the writings of the Remnant Church to establish their character and message. They were nearly always persecuted by tyrannical governments and religious leaders.

In the New World, Mennonites and other persecuted believers were allowed to settle in Pennsylvania. Here they were protected by the state constitution, which guaranteed freedom of worship for all. The national Constitution followed that state's lead with essentially the same guarantee in the First Amendment.

The Anabaptists stood almost alone in Europe in championing this freedom. Luther, Zwingli, and late Calvin likewise reacted against the ecclesiastical Rome's oppression of minorities. They all originally advocated freedom of choice in religion. But one by one, these great leaders had what the author calls a "second conversion." They each compromised and established and maintained state churches, denying freedom of religious choice and oppressing minorities within their countries.

This landmark study documents the important contribution of the Remnant Church to the granting of religious freedom in this country through the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
